RED LEAD DIYI3I0M RECOMhEKOED PROGRAM FOR 1950
GEM PUL
*
It 1* fait that tha raphtsla of the work of this Division should egr.ln be plrced oo promotion rathar then raaaerch In 1950, a wns dona in 1949. In this way full advantage can ba trken of tha raaaarch programs started, and in so*# caaaa concluded, In recant yecrs. It la fait, horever, that new developments nay nek* cdvlsabl* a 11mltad amount of additional raaaerch to keep our recom mendations and promotional nctarlal up to deta end to provide data for promotional work In future rears. Therefore, a 11*1 tod amount of research la Included In the Recomoended Program for 1950, _
PCBUCITT FOR ATMOSPHERIC
EXPOSURE PROCRAM
-
The first report of this program, describing It In detail, and tha flrat pregraas report rating tha specimens efter one year's ex-
roaure, will hare been published and circulated to some 10,000 or 5,000 people by the end of 1949. It la felt that at loaat one ad ditional progress report should be Issued during 1950. While frecuent reports cay not shoe much difference In the ratings on many of 3 the panels at this early stage of the project, they seem advisable for the purpose of bringing the project before the people ww wish to Interest.
It also seams advisable during 1950 to prepare a paper describ ing, In detail, tha atmospheric exposure prograc and giving prelimi nary reports of results for delivery before some Paint and Varnish Production Clubs during 1950, followed In later yeara by papers bringing the preliminary data up to date.
RED LEAD TECHNICAL LETTERS
The Red lead Technical letters issued by the Association haw*
received broad and favorable acceptance and have resulted In the
adaption of suggr-ated formulas In a number of cates kno-ro to us. It if
felt that there will be sufficient data available to Issue tno more
J
Technical Letters during 1950, These will be circulated, as In the past, to between 10,000 and 15,000 manufacturers, users and specifier*
of metal protective paints. Publicising these Technical Letters in
tha trade press has also brought cany Inquiries which have added
valuable names to our mailing list and such publicity should be coo-
t**ed for future Technical letter*.
PRIMERS FOR OALVABIZED IROW
Last year It ms suggested that a number of articles might ba prepared on the Association's project on primers for galvanised iron, for publication In fern papers, factory maintenance papers, sheet metal.

This work was not con summated In 1949 and It Is suggested that It ba included In the 1990 program. Likewise, It was suggested a year ago that this work, at a somewhat later data, would land Itself to preparation of a paper befora Paint and Vamlsh Production Clubs, subsequently to ba published In the 'Official Digest,* reprints to be used by the Association and Its neabers. This also should ba a part of the 1950 activities.
VEHICLES FOR OSE WITH RED LEAD MIXED PIGMDTT FORMULATIDES
It was also suggested a year ago that an early research pro! ject of the Association on suitable vehicles for use with rad lead
nixed plgaent formulations would yield data suitable for the prepa ration of a paper on this subject. As this has not yet been done. It should be included In the 1990 activities.
PAPER OR METAL PROTECTIVE PAIffTS EATIOklL A556CU?IM'br COPROSIOH EKGIKEER3
At the annual seating of the Rational Association of Corrosion
Engineers In April, 1949, s paper on MeUl Protective Primers was de
livered by Ur. 8. C. Prye of the Bethlahea Steel Corp. This paper
turned out to be excellent promotional material for red lead. It has
not as yet been published In 'Corrosion," the cfflelal publication of
the R.A.C.Z. When this paper appears in print, reprints should be
i
obtained by the Association and circulated to our walling list of between 10,000 and 19,000 interested people.
RESEARCH
It is fait that because of new developoents in vehicles It Wight be wise to Initiate s limited oroyram of study of vehicles for use with mixed plgaent red lead paints, to carry on where earlier similar erolects of the Association left off. Results of such A program could be the basis for proaotlonal work in later years.
FIELD WORE
v
A larger amount of field work should be included In the 1990 activities. It will be necessary to keep close contact "1 th the Kavv'a cooperative test orograms on aetul protective paints and also o bring the lnforeatlon developed In auch tasts, and In our own tests, before Govemwent agencies and large Industrial users and specifiers of paint and paint manufacturers.
A larger amount of time In the field will also be required to -aka Inspections of the L.Z.A. atmospheric exposure program.
