RE: Asbestos-Free Fibrous Adhesive
This is to advise you on an asbestos-free fibrous adhesive to replace Manville's asbestos Fibrous Adhesive, stock No. 094-124-0001. The major application for this type adhesive is to secure insulation blocks to steel surfaces prior to the installation of refractory linings in furnace construction.
The recommended material is Foster Fibrous Adhesive, asbestos-free. This product has been used at the Davenport Works, and Pat Ward Davenport's Ingot Plant Furnace Engineer believes that it is the best adhesive he has used todate. The attached flyer describes the two types of Foster Adhesive products available, and the recommended type for the above application is the trowel consistency 81-93, priced at approximately $8 per gallon FOB Houston, TX.
The new corporate stock numbers assigned to the above adhesives are as follows:
1. 094-124-3000: Foster Fibrous Adhesive, asbestos-free No. 81-27, 12.2 lb/gal.
2. 094-124-3100: Foster Fibrous Adhesive, asbestos-free No. 81-93, 13.5 lb/gal.
Some plant locations have been looking for a better fibrous adhesive then the asbestos-free product presently in use. Therefore, we suggest that you route this letter to your furnace group to alert them on this product.

FOSTER FIBROUS ADHESIVE ASBESTOS-FREE
FOSTER FIBROUS ADHESIVE is a sodium silicate based adhesive for bonding calcium silicate thermal insulation to itself and to non-porous surfaces. It offers maximum adhesion and optimum working qualities and it forms a hard, brittle, incombustible film.
FIBROUS ADHESIVE can also be used for lagging asbestos cloth on high temperature insulation.
FOSTER FIBROUS ADHESIVE complies with Rule 442, Subsection (h) of the Southern California Air Pollution Control District. It does not contain photochemicaily reactive solvent as defined by Rule 102 of the Southern California Air Pollution Control District.
FIBROUS ADHESIVES 81-27 and 81-93 can be furnished on special order to meet Military Specification MIL-1-24244 as 81-27Q and 81-93Q.
LIMITATIONS Since the dry adhesive film is soluble in water, it should not be used where moisture will be encountered. BECAUSE OF ITS SODIUM SILICATE BASE, THIS PRODUCT IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR USE WITH GLASS OR MINERAL WOOL INSULATION. Primed or painted metal surfaces should be tested for compatibility with FIBROUS ADHESIVE. Do not store or apply below 40F (4C) or above 90F (32C).
