MI FIELD ACTIVITY R2PCKT Week Ending October 17, 1967
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The final assembly and subsequent critical testing program on the finish mill motors is virtually at a standstill at this time* This is due to a.fault found in several of the motors that is apparently a manufacturing defect. We have already experienced considerable delay since the first problem with the finisher motor ms encountered and -rill probably experience two or three '.reeks additional delay even if the problem is solved at once, ihe Westinghouse people are forking cn this problem and are obviously making every effort to come vx> with a decision.
In the Waste Seat Boiler Area, all concerned (with the exception of Wo Piping) on hangers and supports, have made very good progress in the pagt month which -was in an effort to start the boiler and furnace on the First of November. As a result of the delays caused by late Bravo design changes, it appears that we will be unable to start making steam in the No, 1 Waste Heat Boiler before November 15. The specific problem here is change plus additional supports and hangers required before admitting 425 pounds of steam from Boiler No* into the Waste Heat Boiler Area steam pipe. Every effort has been made to expedite the necessary materials, however, there are still seme parts missing and even though they will be delivered in the next few days the chances of improving the 3oiler startup to a date earlier than November 15 are not good.
As of a week ago, we have lost all of the Pipefitters that came from West Virginia and we have not been able to maintain the force of Fitters that we had two weeks ago* We have had a drop of approximately 45 Fitters in the past two '.reeks. Since we contemplated reducing our manpower in the near future, the net result is not serious at this time.
We are presently reducing usage of construction equipment and will continue to do so for the rest of this year* A list of the equipment that is being retired or put on the idle line has been transmitted to Armco for their disposition.
The structural steel combine was scheduled to begin erection of steel at the BOF cn October 17 As of this date, only baseplate have been installed as the many shipments received do not contain the proper itaw to erect a unit cf steel.
The settlement problem that was bothering the Westa equipment erection
representative is evidently solved and '.re are now -xxsediting the
Eichlcay Corporation to install equi>
whereby the -schedule
of the other crafts can be met.
The insulators walked off 'the ,iob for a day during the period as a result of the firing of one of the men. The subcontractor resolved the problem with the union* the man wa s not returned to the ,icb. This caused us a days insulating time if.hich we can ill afford, particularly, in view of the amount of work toaccomplish and the shortage of qualified men.
