GUARDIAN Spiral-Wound Gaskets.........
for pipe flanges, pressure vessels and process applications and for manholes, handholes, tubecaps
Type CR GUARDIAN GasKets are made of preformed strips of 304 stainless steel and Canadian asbestos filler. Nominal thickness is .175" ...designed for com pression to .130" .005". No further adjustment nec essary after initial compression.
The 1 /8" thick carbon steel gauge ring, treated to re sist atmospheric corrosion, assures correct positioning of gasket within bolt circle. Also acts as a reference plane to avoid excessive compression during bolt tightening.
Standard CR GUARDIAN Gaskets are supplied in ac cordance with API Specifications 601, where appli cable.
Where existing centering compression gauge rings are available for reuse, spiral-wound refills only can be ordered by specifying Type CF instead of Type CR. Type CRI GUARDIAN Gaskets, which basically are Type CR Gaskets with the addition of a stainless steel or carbon steel inner ring, are available on special inquiry/request. (Other inner ring materials available upon request.)
TYPE CR GUARDIAN SPIRAL-WOUND GASKETS

NOTES:
1. For limitations or recommended usage of these spiral-wound gaskets see API Std. 601 - Table 3.
2. API Std. 601 does not include dimensions tor `A", 3Vi", or 4V?" nominal pipe sizes.
3. Gasket O.D. dimensions shown are overall. API Std. 601 lists 0.0. dimensions to O.D. of bearing surface. Therefore, dimensions shown here are `/i" greater than in API Std. 601.
4. There are no 400 lb. flanges in sizes 'A'' thru 3" (use 600 lbs.), nor 900 lb. flanges in sizes A" thru 2`A" (use 1500 lbs.). Also, there are no 2500 lb. flanges in sizes 14" thru 24"
Order by type, nominal pipe size, and pressure series.
Type CRI with `A" thick inner ring available only for welding neck |omts l`A"-60" nominal pipe size in all pressure series with gasket and centering gauge ring dimensions as above. Inner ring I.D. equivalent to pipe I.D. plus Vs". Pipe schedule must be specified on orders for Type CRI to API Standard 601 Specifications.
Tvi>; CP-Rj GLAF.D ~ \ Gas .ft.- are designed for re placing API rings in ring joint flanges
Type CR-RJ Gaskets have a .1 75" thick spiral-wound sealing element, and a 1 /8" thick gauge ring designed to cover area of flange face from inside of bolt holes to slightly beyond ID of groove. This limits bearing sur face to area between flange ID and slightly inside groove ID. Due to this limitation and the fact that its .175" thickness is designed for optimum compression to 130" -- .005", Type CR-RJ is not available for pipe sizes less than 2"
Converting from API rings to Type CR-RJ GUARDIAN Gaskets reduces downtime, labor costs, and gasket costs. Increases productivity.
TYPE CR-RJ GUARDIAN SPIRAL-WOUND GASKETS
For use in lieu of standard oval or octagonal rings in welding neck ring joints having
bore to accommodate schedule 40 or heavier pipe to ANSI B16.20 specifications.

All dimensions are given in inches
Decimal equivalents lor certain fractional dimensions are 0 001" more than previously published data and wall thicknesses in this Catalog because ol a change in Pipe Standards procedure lor round-off.
The decimal thicknesses listed for the respective pipe sizes represent their nominal or average wall dimensions The actual thicknesses may be as much as 12 5"n under the
nominal thickness because oi mill tolerance Thicknesses shown in bold face tor Schedule BO and heavier pipe are not currently supplied by the mills, unless a certain minimum
lonnage is ordered

CONSTRUCTION GUARDIAN Spiral-Wound Gaskets are manufactured under the most rigid engineering specifications and quality con trol standards in the industry. They are made of alternating plies of preformed, "V" shaped metals and asbestos or other fillers. This combination provides the resiliency and spring-like action necessary for automatic adjustment of the gasket to mechanical compression, internal pressure
variations and temperature changes. Each metal edge creates a microscopic penetration of the gasket bearing surface. This effects a multiple seal with greater safety at comparatively light bolt loads. Also taken into consider ation, to build up proper resiliency, are original make-up, relaxed and maintenance make-up loads.
Relationship of engineered "V" design of preformed metal plies to selected filler is varied according to the bolting of joint assembly to maintain gasket resiliency, and control gasket compressibility Note, in illustration, there are more plies of metal and filler in a dense or "hard" gasket than in a less dense or "soft" one . . . although the inside and out side gasket dimensions remain the same.
MATERIALS Standard GUARDIAN Spiral-Wound Gasket material for the preformed "V" plies is Type 304 stainless stefel. Standard filler material is Canadian chrysotile asbestos, unadulter ated with coloring contaminants.
Other available metals and alloys are plated low carbon steel. Monel, titanium, nickel. Inconel, Hastelloy B*, phosphor bronze and stainless steel Types 309S, 316Land 347. Other filler materials include compressed asbestos
with various binders and non-ferrous alloys. Also PTFE, PYROFILTM, and GRAPH-LOCKTM which are recommended for chemical and process applications requiring a high de gree of resistance to corrosion and/or temperature.

GUARDIAN Spiral-Wound Gaskets in standard materials are available for immediate delivery from GARLOCK ware houses for ANSI standard flanged fittings (ANSI B16.5), in nominal pipe sizes 1/4" to 24" in all pressure series to 2500 psi. Also available in accordance with current Military Specifications.
SPECIAL GUARDIAN Spiral-Wound Gaskets can be de signed and manufactured for special applications using other than standard flanged fittings. See information under "SPECIAL GUARDIAN GASKETS" below.
SPECIAL GUARDIAN GASKETS GARLOCK engineers design special gaskets for non standard joints in piping systems and pressure vessels in which spiral-wound construction can be used. Special GUARDIAN Gaskets are used in a wide range of original equipment including aircraft, diesel, gas and rocket engines; boiler feed, centrifugal, condensate, reciprocating and vacuum pumps; gauge and sight glasses; centrifugal and reciprocating compressors; high pressure and soot blowers; hydraulic and molding presses; gas and steam turbines; heat exchangers; high voltage power trans formers; all types of valves.
Special GUARDIAN Gaskets are available in .0625", .125", .175", .250" and .285" thicknesses, depending
upon joint design . .. any practical pressure/temperature combination'. .. vacuum to 70 MPa (10,145 psi).. . cryo genic to 1100 C (2012 F) line temperature ,.. any prac tical diameter/thickness combination larger than gaskets for nominal 24" pipe size ... any combination of metals and fillers listed under "MATERIALS"
When ordering or making inquiry for special GUARDIAN Gaskets, give complete information on operating conditions --pressure, temperature and confined fluid--and joint de sign and dimensional data. If available, attach rough sketch or engineer's drawing of joint design.
Due to size and/or materials, special gaskets (other than Types BH and BM) are designated GARLOCK Type FX.
Color Coded for Instant Identification
Now the guesswork's gone. Conve nient, two-way color coding lets you quickly and positively identify the ma terials in your GARLOCK GUARDIAN Spiral-Wound Gaskets. Solid bands tell you the metal. Short stripes tell you the filler. This highly visible coding is placed on the outside of the gauge ring so you can't miss it whether the gasket is on a storeroom shelf or in stalled between flanges.
